FM 6-22: Guideline For Becoming U.S Army Leader
An army leader is person who dedicates his life for the betterment and prosperity of his soldiers and army civilians so that they can serve the nation in the best way possible. A true army leader understands his duties and responsibilities towards his nation. He always gives respect to his fellow soldiers and subordinates and teaches them to be confident, persistent, brave, agile and competent.
The FM 6-22 manual focuses on eight main features necessary to become a real leader. These features are given below:

According to FM 6-22 manual, leadership depends on the qualities of a true leader. An army leader is the one whose attitude and discipline inspires and encourages others to focus on their organizational goals and accomplish them sincerely. Army leaders also incite their army fellows to be firmed, active, focused and strong just like him and give their best shot for improvement of their organization.
To exhibit the great leadership knowledge and experience is essential for an army leader. He must be aware of all the strategies, organizations, technical systems, needs of people and the management of resources. He must also have an experience of war so that he can teach his subordinates in a better way. The actions of a leader are also an influential part of the leadership. The soldiers and other subordinates are influenced greatly by the actions of their leaders because leaders are always ideal for the followers. Thus, the knowledge and experience of an army leader must be displayed in his actions.
Basis Of Army Leadership Mentioned In FM 6-22:
According to FM 6-22, the basis of army leadership is rooted in the good characteristics of an army leader, such as loyalty to the nation, sincerity towards nation’s law and order, knowledge of history, respect the accountability rules etc. The leadership philosophy believes that a leader must be adapted to changes in his profession as an army leader has to face many sudden changes in life like new weapons, alternate strategies, advanced security threats etc.
Leadership Levels Explained In FM 6-22:
In the manual FM 6-22, three levels of army leadership are explained in details. These levels of leadership are assigned to the leaders on the basis of some important factors like, impact of leader’s position, headquarter level and the controls he possesses. These three levels are:
The direct level of leadership is a kind of person to person leadership. These leaders are posted at organizations where subordinates are habitual of seeing their leaders all the time. For instance, troops, squadrons, teams, companies, battalions etc.
The organizational level of leadership is entirely different from direct leadership. The organizational leaders assign other subordinate leaders to help them leading the army. They create influential policies and control thousands of people by organization method.
The strategic level is under control of military and army civilian leaders from the Department of Defense (DOD). These leaders have a crucial role as they design the vision and structure that improves the future of army.
