Department of the Army of United States of America

Department of the army is a military department within the Department of Defense of the United States of America. It is also a Federal Government agency, which organize the U.S army under the leadership of the Secretary of the army. The Secretary of the army is a statutory authority of the Department of the Army who conducts its daily operations and prescribes regulations for its government within the limits of the law and the directions of the Secretary of Defense and the President.

Department of the Army Organizational Structure

The Department of the Army works within the Department of Defense of the United States of America. It is headed by the Secretary of the Army, a civilian appointed by the President after the approval of the United States Senate. The Secretary of the Army has the authority to conduct its daily affairs and is responsible for all the work done within the Department of the Army.

The Secretary of the Army assigns army troops as directed by the Secretary of Defense and performs duties specified in 10 U.S.C 3013. Only the Secretary of Defense (and the President) has the authority to approve the transfer of army forces to and from combatant commands.

Department of the Army Headquarters

The Department of the Army headquarters is the corporate office of the organization exercising directive and supervisory functions and includes two separate staffs: the Office of the Secretary of the Army and the Army Staff.

The Office of the Secretary is headed by the Secretary of the Army, assisted by the Under Secretary of the Army and the administrative assistant of the Secretary of the Army. It is also known as the Army Secretariat, is divided into several branches with functional responsibilities.

The Army Staff is headed by the Chief of Staff who is a four-star general and the highest ranked army official and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is assisted by the Vice Chief of staff of the United States Army who is also a four-star general and the second highest ranking official in the Army.
